Educational Offer
We have an educational programme which we offer throughout the school year and during the Summer we also run family-friendly, nature-related events as well. (note on Covid19)
The school sessions are provided at Eastbrookend Country Park and the Chase Nature Reserve for the ‘Rivers’ topic, and also in Barking Park. Site Summary
- 74 hectares (185 acre)
- Runs from the New Road (A1306) by the Ford Motor Works along the River Beam up to the Barking-Basildon railway line
- Southwards extension of Eastbrookend Country Park.
- Woodlands and Grassland
- Ponds and Marsh areas
- Variety of historical features, including tank traps, pillboxes and a section of the Old Romford Canal.
Site History
- Archaeology: evidence that the area has been used since the Stone Age. Features such as a farmstead were discovered, as well as evidence that cremation burials of some of the farmers and their families took place. A Roman pottery kiln was discovered too.
- 19th century: section of the never-completed 19th century Romford Canal, created to transport Romford’s significant potato crops to London (and bring back manure on the return journey!).
- Second World War features: tank traps, pillboxes, plus parts of the canal were reused for war defence.
